Unconventional indie stories deserve premium, professional polishing—minus the gatekeeping and astronomical price tags. Encompass Press is a human-driven editing company dedicated to bringing out the absolute best in your manuscript while fiercely preserving your author voice. We stan queer romance and champion diverse stories across every genre, offering comprehensive editing packages that handle everything from pacing and worldbuilding to grammar.

If you didn't let a robot write it, we won't let a robot touch it;
bring us your passion, your messiest (but professional) drafts, and your favorite em-dashes.

We are humans. We have feelings and a deep understanding of prose and the power of using language to elicit emotion.
Robots do not.
It is in our contract to immediately cancel a job if we confirm or strongly suspect AI has been used.
No, this does not mean we will attack you or your em-dash—we'll probably add a few.
No, we do not look for AI with AI.
Just don't submit something you didn't pour your heart and soul into.
How embarrassing we even have to say this.

Services

Proofreading

This is a speed read. We're looking for basic typos here. You're not going to get running commentary and we're not going to worry overly much about your sentence structure or character development.

If it is glaringly obvious you need more than just a proof, we'll be sure to let you know.

We'll still do the proof should you choose to stick with just that, but we can't abide sending an unpolished work out into the world without doing our due diligence.

That would be doing all of us a disservice.

Full Edits

One package. One price.

Because I can't stop myself from doing all of these things when I edit.

You'll get two full rounds of edits with comments on character development, plot, pacing, worldbuilding, and sometimes random thoughts that something you wrote made me think or feel.

We'll also catch all that pesky grammar stuff.

Transcription

Accessibility issues keeping you from telling your story? Arthritis got you down? Do you just like the sound of your own voice?

We've got you covered.

We'll transcribe, word for word, your novel for you. You just record it one chapter or scene at a time, send it over to us, and you'll end up with a manuscript.

No, we won't transcribe your YouTube videos or meeting minutes or court recordings.

We do books here.

Our turnaround times for novels vary based on how clean the writing is when it gets to us, how long the manuscript is, and how on top of accepting and rejecting edits the client is. 90% of our edits are finished, both rounds, within a week.
We advise you to be prepared for two weeks just in case.
Life happens.

Testimonials

He doesn't try to change our voice into something robotic, and I trust the fuck out of him to say "No, bitch!" when something isn't working. Equally, he gives high praise when it does work, and that is like gold to an author ego! At this point, I cannot see myself trusting our book babies to anyone else. ~N.O. One

David Sharpens your writing without bulldozing your voice. He doesn't rewrite your book; he makes it better. And the feedback? Brutally honest (because anything less is a waste of time). Delivered with sass, spice, and humor that makes edits feel less like homework and more like getting roasted by your funniest friend. It's like having a hype man and a drill sergeant in one incredibly efficient package. ~Emery Quinn

I've worked with dozens of editors in my career and David Michael is absolutely one of the best. His keen eye for detail and copious comments elevated my entire series to the next level. David's whip-smart sense of humor and his passion for craft make him a joy to work with. ~Tawna Fenske USA Today bestselling author

About David

David Michael has been a lifelong reader and word nerd, and published his first of eleven books in 2013. After launching and operating Live Literately, a non-profit organization that delivered thousands of books to kids over its six years in operation, he began editing for friends. After a heaping of encouragement and outright begging, he finally launched Encompass Press in 2021 and began editing professionally.

Since then, he has edited more than 120 published novels across more genres than he can be bothered to keep track of. His love for reading and quality storytelling shines through in the care and commitment he delivers with every edit and comment he leaves, always ensuring he preserves the author's voice and artistic style first and foremost.
